Application of Lotte VA800(SEETEC VA800) Ethylene Vinyl Acetate Copolymer

What Changes When Frozen-Food Packaging Requires a Low-Seal-Initiation Layer Without Solvent-Based Adhesives?

A three-layer blown-film coextrusion line running linear low-density polyethylene in the core and SEETEC VA800-modified outer layers produces agricultural greenhouse cover film with lower low-temperature brittleness and higher infrared retention than pure LLDPE film of equivalent thickness. In this application, VA800 is added at 10–30 wt% of the total outer-layer polymer blend, most commonly 20–25 wt% in the skin layers and 0–10 wt% in the core when the film width exceeds 8 m. The VA800 grade contains a nominal vinyl acetate fraction of 8 wt% and is therefore processed at a melt temperature of 155–180°C; because the vinyl acetate ester group undergoes thermal deacetylation above 220°C, screw designs with L/D 25:1 to 30:1 and compression ratios of 2.2:1 to 2.8:1 are used to limit shear heating. Die gap is set at 1.8–2.2 mm; blow-up ratio is 2.2:1 to 3.0:1; frost-line height is 500–800 mm; output is held at 1.1–1.6 kg/mm die circumference/h on high-output air-ring equipment. Pre-drying at 60–70°C for 2 h is required when surface moisture exceeds 0.10 wt% to prevent gel specks. The finished film is evaluated against EN 13206:2017 for agricultural covering films; mechanical properties follow ISO 527-3 and ASTM D882-18; optical haze is measured under ASTM D1003-21; and impact resistance under ASTM D1709-16a. REACH registration and RoHS compliance are verified for EU shipment. Terminal products include long-life greenhouse covers, low tunnel cloches, silage stretch film, and perforated crop protection wraps.

What Changes When Frozen-Food Packaging Requires a Low-Seal-Initiation Layer Without Solvent-Based Adhesives?

In three-layer coextruded blown film for quick-frozen vegetables, seafood, and prepared foods, the sealant layer contains 20–35 wt% VA800 blended with LLDPE and LDPE. The proportion is adjusted by differential scanning calorimetry to bring the seal initiation temperature down to 85–105°C while retaining hot-tack strength. The film is produced on a coextruded blown-film line with a barrier screw, L/D 30:1, die diameter 250–400 mm, die gap 1.7–2.0 mm, and a dual-lip air ring. Melt temperatures by layer are held at 160–190°C, with the sealant layer at the lower end of the range to prevent deacetylation; cooling air temperature is 5–15°C; blow-up ratio is 2.0:1 to 2.8:1. Corona treatment to 36–42 mN/m is applied before printing or lamination. Food-contact compliance is demonstrated under FDA 21 CFR 177.1350 and EU Regulation (EU) No 10/2011; overall migration limits are tested by EN 1186-1 and specific migration by EN 1186-14, with residual vinyl acetate monomer below 0.05 mg/kg in finished film. Terminal products include form-fill-seal pouches, frozen food bags, vacuum-packaging films for meats, and lidding films with easy-peel or seal-peel performance.

Crosslinked Closed-Cell EVA Foam Systems: Dicumyl Peroxide Gelation and Azodicarbonamide Decomposition Windows

For crosslinked polyolefin foam sheet used in footwear midsoles and sports mats, VA800 is compounded at 15–40 phr into a polymer blend containing higher vinyl acetate EVA at 60–85 phr, LDPE at 0–15 phr, and ethylene-propylene elastomer at 0–10 phr. The use of VA800 raises the melt viscosity of the polymer phase during the blowing stage and reduces cell collapse when density is lowered to 0.10–0.25 g/cm³. Blowing agent azodicarbonamide is added at 2.5–4.5 phr; dicumyl peroxide crosslinker at 0.6–1.2 phr; zinc oxide blowing activator at 0.5–1.5 phr; stearic acid at 0.3–0.8 phr; calcium carbonate filler at 5–15 phr. Mixing is conducted in a Banbury-type internal mixer with a drop temperature of 105–120°C, followed by a two-roll mill at 85–100°C to form a uniform pre-sheet. The sheet is then calendered to 1.5–3.0 mm and compression molded in a two-platen hydraulic press. In the gel phase, temperature is held at 130–145°C for 8–12 min; in the foaming phase, the press is raised to 170–190°C for 5–10 min. The decomposition onset of azodicarbonamide and the peroxide cure rate create a processing window of approximately ±5°C; below the window the foam is undercrosslinked with coarse cell structure, above the window gas release outpaces melt viscosity development and produces surface splitting. Density, tensile, tear, and compression set are tested according to ASTM D3575-20; hardness under ASTM D2240-15; density under ISO 845:2006. REACH and RoHS compliance applies to the final foam. Terminal products include compression-molded shoe midsoles, insoles, yoga mats, gym pads, anti-fatigue mats, and gasketing sheet stock. Formulations containing dicumyl peroxide must not be held above 120°C during calendering or sheet accumulation to prevent premature crosslinking.

On a co-rotating twin-screw extruder with L/D 40:1 and segmented screw geometry, SEETEC VA800 functions as a carrier resin in the manufacture of additive masterbatches and compounds. The carrier fraction is 25–60 wt% of the final granulate, active additives occupy 20–60 wt%, and processing aids such as PE wax or EBS are metered at 1–3 wt%. VA800 is selected when the target masterbatch must combine lipophilic polyolefin compatibility with sufficient polar group acceptance for inorganic pigments, hindered amine light stabilizers, and brominated flame retardants. The extruder profile runs from 120°C in the feed throat to 180°C at the strand die; screw speed is 250–600 rpm; specific mechanical energy input is 0.15–0.25 kWh/kg; vacuum devolatilization is maintained at −0.06 to −0.09 MPa to strip residual moisture. Strand granulation uses an underwater pelletizer with water temperature 15–30°C and die hole diameter 2.5–4.0 mm. The MFR of the resulting masterbatch is measured by ISO 1133-1:2022 or ASTM D1238-20 at 190°C and 2.16 kg; moisture content is verified by ISO 15512:2019 to remain below 0.10 wt%. If the masterbatch is intended for indirect food-contact packaging, the relevant migration assessment is performed under EU Regulation (EU) No 10/2011 and FDA 21 CFR 177.1350. Terminal products include color concentrates for polyolefin films, UV-stabilizer masterbatches for agricultural film, flame-retardant concentrates for HFFR cable compounds, and slip/antiblock concentrates. Amine-based additives that undergo alkaline hydrolysis should be screened for compatibility with vinyl acetate ester groups at residence times above 60 s.

When Collapsible Pharmaceutical Tubes Are Blow Molded from LDPE/EVA Blends

Extrusion blow molding of collapsible pharmaceutical and cosmetic tubes uses VA800 as a stress-crack-resistant modifier in LDPE at addition levels of 10–30 wt%. The melt index of the blend is maintained between 0.7 g/10 min and 2.0 g/10 min under 190°C/2.16 kg for parison hang strength. The line uses a single-station shuttle blow-molding machine with a 60–80 mm grooved-barrel extruder, L/D 24:1 to 30:1, and parison programming to adjust wall thickness across the tube shoulder and crimp area. Melt temperature at the head is 150–185°C; mold cooling water is held at 8–15°C; blow ratio is 2.5:1 to 3.5:1; clamp force for a 4-cavity tool is typically 80–150 kN. The resulting container is tested for environmental stress-crack resistance by ASTM D1693-15 method B in 10% Igepal CO-630 at 50°C, with failure time not less than 48 h for pharmaceutical squeeze tubes. Mechanical performance is measured under ISO 527-2 and ASTM D638-14. Food and drug contact compliance follows FDA 21 CFR 177.1350 and EU Regulation (EU) No 10/2011; plastic packaging requirements under USP 661.1 apply to medicinal containers. Terminal products include ophthalmic dropper bottles, nasal spray tubes, cosmetic squeeze tubes, and pharmaceutical dispensing containers.

Halogen-Free Flame-Retardant Cable Jacketing Compounds Demand Filler Loading Within a Narrow Viscosity Envelope

In HFFR cable sheathing compounds, the polymer phase commonly comprises LLDPE, higher-VA EVA, and a compatibilizer. VA800 is incorporated at 10–30 wt% of the total polymer phase to adjust melt viscosity and filler wetting; it does not replace higher-VA EVA where low-temperature flexibility below −25°C is required. A representative formulation contains polymer phase 30–40 wt%, aluminum trihydride or magnesium dihydrate filler 55–65 wt%, hindered phenol antioxidant 0.2–0.5 wt%, zinc stearate acid scavenger 0.5–1.0 wt%, and silicone-based processing aid 1–2 wt%. Mixing is carried out on a co-rotating twin-screw extruder with L/D 44:1, side-fed filler at barrel segment 6 to 8, zone temperatures from 120°C in the feed zone to 190°C at the die, screw speed 300–600 rpm, and melt temperature controlled below 200°C to avoid vinyl acetate ester decomposition. The sheathing compound is then extruded onto cable cores through a crosshead die with pressure tooling; polymer melt pressure at the breaker plate is maintained at 10–25 MPa. Flame performance is tested according to IEC 60332-1-2:2015; gas acidity per IEC 60754-2; mechanical properties per IEC 60811-501; and UL evaluation under UL 94 V-0 where applicable. Terminal products include building wire jackets, control cable sheathing, photovoltaic cable jackets, and underground installation conduit coatings. Exposure to moisture before compounding must be controlled to below 0.10 wt% to prevent filler agglomeration and surface pitting in the extruded jacket.

    More Introduction

The Lotte Chemical SEETEC VA800 resin is an ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer containing a nominal 8.0 wt% vinyl acetate comonomer, with a melt mass-flow rate of 0.8 g/10 min when determined at 190°C under a 2.16 kg piston load using ASTM D1238 and ISO 1133-1. Density is specified at 0.929 g/cm³ by ASTM D1505 or ISO 1183. The dual product designation Lotte VA800 and SEETEC VA800 refers to the same copolymer supplied in pellet form. The CAS registry number for ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer is 24937-78-8. Because the resin carries only 8 wt% vinyl acetate, it occupies the low-comonomer segment of the SEETEC EVA portfolio; this distinguishes it from higher-acetate grades used in high-tack adhesives, solar encapsulant films, and low-hardness foams.

What property set is regarded as release-critical for VA800?

The grade is controlled primarily by melt flow, vinyl acetate content, and density. The table below lists the nominal values commonly referenced on certificates of analysis. Extended mechanical values are not usually release limits but are available from lot-specific test data.

    Property Test method Nominal value
    Melt mass-flow rate ASTM D1238 / ISO 1133-1:2022, 190°C, 2.16 kg 0.8 g/10 min
    Vinyl acetate content ASTM D5594 / Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy 8.0 wt%
    Density ASTM D1505 / ISO 1183 0.929 g/cm³

Mechanical test data such as tensile strength at break and elongation under ASTM D638 or ISO 527-2 are not primary release limits but are reported on certificates of analysis. Published lot-test variability for 8 wt% vinyl acetate EVA places tensile strength at break in the tens of MPa and elongation at break above 600%; however, the current lot certificate is the controlling source because conditioning at 23°C and 50% relative humidity for 40 h under ASTM D618 alters semicrystalline morphology. The 0.8 g/10 min melt flow places the grade in the low-flow extrusion regime, where blown-film bubble stability is favored over thin-wall injection moulding. Converters requiring injection-moulding flow above 5 g/10 min would select a different SEETEC grade.

Before conversion, VA800 should be protected from moisture uptake if ambient relative humidity exceeds 60%; pellet surface moisture above 0.05 wt% can generate bubble defects and gels in cast film. Pre-drying at 60–70°C for 2–4 h in a desiccant dryer with a dew point below -30°C is the typical boundary. Melt-temperature control is the principal thermal boundary. Vinyl acetate groups begin measurable deacetylation at sustained melt temperatures above 230°C; acetic acid evolution is detectable in vent streams by pH measurement or Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. At normal processing melt temperatures between 170°C and 190°C, the decomposition rate is low. Barrel profiles should avoid flat high-shear zones; compression ratios between 2.5:1 and 3.5:1 are adequate for single-screw extrusion. On production-scale blown-film lines, die gaps of 1.5–2.5 mm and blow-up ratios of 2.0:1–3.0:1 are typical for low-vinyl-acetate EVA; published data for this specific grade configuration is limited, and line-specific validation is required. At feed-zone temperatures above 60°C, pellets may soften and bridge in the hopper, a batch-to-batch handling bottleneck observed on 32:1 L/D single-screw extruders. High-shear dispersive mixing should be minimized because the acetate group is shear-sensitive.

When vinyl acetate content is held at 8 wt%, the property envelope shifts measurably from LDPE and from high-acetate EVA

Unmodified LDPE of similar melt index typically shows a differential scanning calorimetry melting peak near 110°C; an 8 wt% vinyl acetate copolymer shows a broadened endotherm with a peak near 95°C and a reduced heat of fusion under ASTM D3418 or ISO 3146 at 10°C/min. This depression lowers heat-seal initiation temperature by approximately 10–15 K in film converting. Flexural modulus decreases relative to LDPE by roughly 20–30%; elongation and environmental stress-crack resistance increase. Environmental stress-crack resistance testing under ASTM D1693 often shows an improvement of at least one order of magnitude over LDPE homopolymer, but lot-specific data must be obtained.

Compared with higher-acetate SEETEC grades, VA800 has lower polarity, higher crystallinity, higher modulus, and lower adhesive tack. The lower polarity reduces migration of polar additives and lowers blocking tendency in wound film. High-acetate EVA grades with 18–28 wt% vinyl acetate are preferred for hot-melt adhesives, solar encapsulants, and high-flex foam; VA800 is not an appropriate substitute where low Shore A hardness or high tack is required. Compared with lower-acetate grades such as VA400 or VA600, VA800 offers greater polarity and higher environmental stress-crack resistance while retaining sufficient crystallinity for dimensional stability. The balance is measurable using ASTM D2240 Shore D hardness, ASTM D790 flexural modulus, and ASTM D1693 ESCR.

Application practice for VA800 is concentrated in extrusion-grade films, surface-protection films, extrusion coating and lamination sealant layers, and as a compounding base resin in masterbatch and cable compounds. In blown film, its 8 wt% acetate content provides lower seal initiation than LDPE while retaining enough crystallinity to avoid tack and blocking. In extrusion coating, VA800 can be coextruded with LDPE or polypropylene tie layers; the acetate group improves adhesion to metal foil, paper, and polar substrates compared with LDPE, but adhesion to aluminum foil is lower than EVA grades with 18 wt% vinyl acetate. Adhesion in laminate structures is commonly evaluated under ASTM F904 or internal peel tests after conditioning at 23°C and 50% relative humidity. The grade is also used as an impact modifier or compatibilizer in filled polyolefin compounds; when compounded with calcium carbonate, stearic acid, and polyethylene wax, the acetate group reduces interfacial energy and improves filler dispersion. VA800 is not recommended for high-temperature wire insulation exposed to sustained conductor temperatures above 75°C because oxidative induction time and thermal endurance fall.

Regulatory status, migration limits, and conversion boundaries for VA800

Food-contact use is generally supported under FDA 21 CFR 177.1350 for ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymers and under Regulation (EU) No 10/2011 as amended, provided the finished article meets the overall migration limit of 10 mg/dm² and any specific migration limit for vinyl acetate monomer. Compliance must be validated by migration testing on the final laminate or moulded article because thickness, temperature, and simulant selection change the diffusion profile. The grade is supplied as a REACH-registered substance; no intentionally added substances of very high concern should be declared. Directive 2011/65/EU is commonly addressed by lot declaration because the polymer does not contain lead, cadmium, mercury, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyls, or polybrominated diphenyl ethers above homogeneous-material thresholds. The grade is not intended for medical implant or long-term in-body use.

Thermal degradation, additive compatibility, and rheological boundaries define the operational space. Sustained barrel temperatures above 230°C generate acetic acid, which can corrode downstream metallic surfaces and produce odorous off-gassing. For this reason, stainless steel melt-contact surfaces and vented screws are recommended. The resin should not be compounded with amine-based additives or basic fillers that catalyze deacetylation; acid scavengers such as calcium hydroxide or hydrotalcite can be used in small amounts but may alter clarity and seal strength. If regrind is used above 30% by weight, the melt flow may shift and film haze can increase; the user must requalify under ASTM D1003 for haze and ASTM D1238 for melt flow. Storage beyond 12 months from the production date may require re-drying and re-testing of melt index. Conversion parameters for specific coextruded structures should be derived from the current lot certificate and from trial runs on the intended production line, not from generic processing guides alone.
